The issue of child abuse is becoming increasingly alarming as the number of cases continues to rise. Sadly, many children suffer injuries or even lose their lives at the hands of their abusers because they are unable to report the abuse or provide sufficient evidence to prove the criticalness of the abuse. The lack of self-protection systems and immediate child care for those exposed to abuse further compounds the problem. To address this critical issue, I have developed Nabi, a wearable technology that combines real-time health monitoring, child supervision, reporting, and healing features to protect abused children from harm and potential fatality. The term "Nabi" is derived from the Korean word for butterfly, a common name given to stray cats by locals. I collaborated with individuals who have personally endured child abuse and are passionate about ending this cycle of violence against children. We wanted to create and contribute this project to those who feel like they don't have a family or home. Nabi is a project that comes from the depths of experience and hope made for children who deserve a brighter future. This project is made for you. From the bottom of our broken and healed hearts.
As a child, experiencing abuse can make you feel powerless, small, and vulnerable. The world can seem like a big and scary place, and all you want is for someone to stand up for you. As someone who grew up fending for themselves from the tender age of nine, I have seen the devastating impact of child abuse firsthand. I have spoken with both abusers and their victims, attended funerals, courts, and hospital visits, followed up on cases, and witnessed the never-ending cycle of abuse and trauma. Despite working with NGOs, hospitals, and schools to try and combat this issue, child abuse cases continue to escalate, leaving me with an overwhelming sense of frustration and sadness. As a senior student in the field of UX design, I knew I had to use my skills to make a difference.
I wanted to fight for the children who couldn't fight for themselves, and that is how the Nabi project was born. The Nabi project aims to address the scourge of child abuse by focusing on cases of abuse, murder, torture, and hate crimes inflicted on innocent children. My focus was on identifying patterns of long-term or repeated abuse and finding ways to gather evidence, particularly from medical records, that could help save children's lives in critical situations. By detecting signs of abuse early on, we can intervene before it's too late. The impact of child abuse goes beyond physical harm and can cause severe emotional distress, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Many abusers continue to abuse their victims again and again, perpetuating a cycle of violence that needs to be broken. According to statistics, at least one in seven children in the US has experienced some form of child abuse. It is a systemic problem that needs urgent attention. In the US alone, between four to seven children die every day due to abuse and neglect, and the number of cases is rising. This is unacceptable, and we must act fast to put an end to it. That is where Nabi comes in. Introducing Nabi, a wearable technology created to address the rising issue of child abuse. Due to the difficulty children face in reporting abuse and providing evidence, many suffer injuries or even lose their lives at the hands of their abusers.
The lack of self-protection systems and immediate child care for those exposed to abuse further exacerbates the problem. Nabi is a wearable device that combines real-time health monitoring, child supervision, reporting, and healing features to protect abused children from harm and potential fatality. It is equipped with biosensors, biometric sensors, activity tracker, and GPS tracking system to monitor the child's physical and emotional state in real-time. Nabi also features a reporting system that can discreetly send reports to designated authorities, governments, or social workers to ensure immediate action is taken. The device is designed to collect definitive evidence and report abuse as soon as it occurs. To make Nabi more appealing and personalizable to children, it is customizable with different charms. Customization is also possible, as children can add charms to their Nabi. These charms were designed and inspired by the sketches and drawings of survivors and victims of child abuse. The product is made of electro variable photo crystalline structure, which actively changes color in realtime through electrical stimulation. This feature alerts caregivers and children of potential unconscious abuse. The device also includes a Voice AI feature that listens and records abuse situations while acknowledging the surroundings. Nabi is made of self-healing polymeric composite material, which has hard, tough properties and good self-healing capabilities.
When external friction or shock occurs, the material quickly becomes solid, protecting itself from impact and recovering damage by returning to a soft state free of molecular movement after impact. Inflammation tests with mice have also shown low toxicity. Furthermore, this specific material is made from fish oil extracted from fish heads, bones, intestines, and shells, making it eco-friendly and sustainable. Nabi's accompanying app connects with the device and is designed specifically for social workers and government officials. The app provides access to the child's status and level of care and wellbeing, supporting officials to provide depth care and a better understanding of the child's status. Nabi is more than just a device. It is a platform created to protect abused children from harm and potential fatality. Its real-time monitoring and reporting features, along with its customizable design and self-healing material, make it an ideal solution to the critical issue of child abuse.
