Bopp is an early childhood development toy set that empowers children to discover the world around them through sound. The physical properties of the surface (such as smoothness, temperature, translucency, color, and density) will generate unique sounds that are generated by an AI system. As no two surfaces are exactly the same, Bopp will provide a tool for virtually limitless exploration and experimentation of the environment of the child.
To encourage the development of both creative and social skills, Bopp is designed to facilitate group play. By splitting the device into its two halves, the child can invite a friend to play along. In this setting, Bopp provides audio games and challenges. With more users joining the group, kids can make a growing connection between friends.
Accessories like drumstick crayons, the music flute, and the recording speaker can expand the gameplay into role-play.
Commercial toys are often designed for fixed game play (such as a fire engine) instead of free play that stimulates the child's imagination. A toy with a single (fixed) gameplay tends to have less play value over time. In contrast, Bopp is designed with open-ended gameplay and utilizes the child's immediate environment as the input to generate sound-based games and experiments. This flexibility encourages children to explore both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Kids might use Bopp to listen to the sound of a tree or the sound of grass. This activity of exploring sound in the environment and discovering the difference in materials will fuel kids' curiosity with questions such as "I wonder what this rock may sound like?" Coupled with a parent-led interface, Bopp can facilitate specific individual and group activities.
As the child's cognitive and motor skills develop, the play capabilities of Bopp will gradually adapt and grow. After the child has mastered certain games and challenges through continuous learning, Bopp will unlock more functions accordingly. If parents enjoy the positive influence Bopp provides, there are additional accessories available that provide an even higher sophistication of the play. This greatly extends the play value and subsequently the lifetime of the toy. It is in essence achieving its main purpose which is "an evolving toy that grows with your child."
Audience benefits
From the child's perspective, Bopp is a toy that blends in with their natural instincts of curiosity and exploration. Invisible as it is, the generated sounds aid in the healthy development of the brain's functions by stimulating the different control centers simultaneously and hence building novel connections. The mind of kids will transfer from "what could this thing sound like?" to "why would this thing sounds like that?". The subtle change of pitch and the new instrument add-in represent the different physical properties of the surface. The child will connect the different surface properties to the sound they heard and gradually build up their cognition of the world through sight, touch, and sound.
From the parent's perspective, Bopp is less of a toy and certainly not a screen. Instead, it is a tool that helps their child become more active, full of the spirit of exploration, and looking at things from a different perspective.
Brand and society benefits
The business model of Bopp enables the user to make a relatively small initial purchase for the base model with optional accessories available at a later point. Additional features can purchase on the app, making the product prices more acceptable to the consumer. By offering a product that can grow with the child, fewer short-term (and short-lived) toy purchases are necessary. Additionally, by giving the parents control over the screen portion via the app, the product can expand in functionality over time. As the base product is capable of multiplayer and group play, other children can try the product without needing to make an initial purchase. If, however, they decide to also acquire Bopp, new modes will be made available via the app.
Diverse buying groups also represent potential market expansions for Bopp. For example, schools and other educational facilities may also want to invest in making Bopp available for teacher-led group activities. The awareness-enhancing features Bopp has also included some specialty medical centers as potential purchasers.
Social impact aspect: Bopp's open-ended play will help the brain develop in very early education by making neural connections between the cells. Natural exploration of one's environment has stress-reducing effects and reduces pressures incurred from traditional education models such as "teach to the test". This help this generation to be better equipped to tackle the challenges in the future.
Environment impact aspect: Another Bopp design intention is to follow the idea of sustainability. Non-bundled purchases reduce the chance of buying an excessive product. The packaging is also designed with this idea, using recyclable material and minimizing the packaging size as possible. Bopp encourages kids to play both indoors and outdoors which is unique to other educational toys. Experiencing nature's beauty through sound will be valuable lesson kids learn while playing, cultivate children's closeness to nature from an early age, and realize the importance of environmental protection.
Worldwide impact aspect: Bopp APP is designed for parents to use, it also allows parents to share their kids playing within a safe community. This will become a worldwide community for everyone who uses Bopp to unlock, forming a positive atmosphere of child education space, and helping kids worldwide to develop a better mindset at an early age. Sound and especially music is, after all, a universal language.
Design Considerations
Bopp design with a human-centered idea. The form was developed based on the research on kids' characteristics within their age. Considering the capability of the kid, design an appropriate size and weight product for them to use in daily life. The round shape provides a gentle form to grab with one hand. The detachable design offers the feature of multi-playing and extending. With the extended shape on the side, accessories could activate and connect with the main product with a simple touch connection which kids can do. Overall a simple shape with no open spaces makes it easy to achieve a waterproof feature, expanding the exploration even further: below water.
The color choice is based on how to attract kids when they play with Bopp, choosing bright orange to create a feeling of energy. This color also becomes a distinctive feature to find when the toy is misplaced. The overall integral shape is also designed with smooth corners to interact safely, with detailed food safety rubber to strengthen the grip of Bopp while the kids are playing.
