C.O.Z.I is a foldable UV light cloth sterilizer, that can disinfect a user's clothes in 30 minutes. It was created as a solution to the real-life problem of people sanitizing their clothes. Several months ago, Lex, who is a friend of mine complained to me about his roommate washing his shoes using the washing machine: "Can you imagine? The feces on the floor and countless germs on his shoes could be sticking to my clothes." He laughed bitterly, "I just don't trust the clothes washing and drying machine anymore." Lex is not alone.
According to the survey, over 200 million people in America are sharing laundry machines with others. Of 70 household washing machines sampled in the study, 79% were positive for fungi. Fungal infections can be deadly for people with weakened immune systems. For example, mucormycosis, a type of fungal infection caused by Mucorales molds, has a mortality rate of over 50% in immunocompromised patients. Therefore, if not effectively sterilized and disinfected, the microorganisms in clothes can cause serious harm to people's health. So how might we help people who have to share their washers and dryers reassure them about the hygiene of their clothing? I recall that in the traditional culture of Asia, people are used to hanging their clothes outside under the sun because they believe that the sun can kill bacteria. If you were to ask Asian people how they know their clothes are clean and germ-free, they would just simply smile and say, "There is the smell of sun on my clothes."
Such a smell is crystallizing, reassuring, and relaxing. That's when the idea came to me: bring the sun indoors. Since we trust the sun's sanitizing power so much, why not utilize this type of sanitizing to give us more peace of mind? Then I decided to use UV light, the part of sunlight that sterilizes, to disinfect people's clothes. This is a very effective, low-cost, and convenient form of sterilization. It takes only 30 minutes for UV light to kill over 99% of microorganisms in the clothes. Moreover, UV-exposed clothing is warm, soft, and has a special aroma, giving people a positive sensory experience. This experience leads people to trust that the product makes their clothes cleaner. As for the design features of this product, it is foldable and easy to put away, saving more than 70% of space compared to when using. It is also safe to use. It can't be turned on except when the cover hood, which can block the UV light, is flipped down, since UV light can harm human eyes when directly looking at it for more than 3 seconds. After 30 minutes, the UV light will automatically go off and a gentle reminder bell will ring, making it convenient to use. Moreover, it is designed to hold 18 clothes at a time, which is the normal laundry load for a single person in one week.
To make users hang their clothes on the hanger more easily, I also designed notches for securing hangers to the hanging ring. There are 4 parts in C.O.Z.I, including a hood (it can block the UV light), a hanging ring (it contains a UV light strip to sterilize clothes), a pole (its height can be adjusted between 3-5 ft), and a base. To manufacture the product using injunction molding, 2 types of plastic are used. UHMWPE, which has high intensity, is used in the hood, hanging ring, and base. More eco-friendly HDPE is used in the pole. Besides, to reduce mold costs, I try to use the same parts in the design so that I can use fewer molds, which cuts down the cost of molds by 60% compared to the original design.
