Food waste has become a pressing issue in the world today, and households are one of the major contributors. In the United States alone, about 25 percent of the food purchased by households is wasted, resulting in billions of dollars in economic losses and significant environmental impacts. One of the major sources of household food waste is cereal, typically used for breakfast cereals and other foods. The disposal of cereal packaging also contributes to the waste problem.
In addition to the food waste problem, urban birds face challenges in finding food sources in cities. As natural habitats continue to shrink, urban areas become increasingly important to the survival of these birds. However, food availability in urban environments is limited, leading to malnutrition and population decline.
Co-Grain is a design solution that addresses both of these issues by repurposing grain packages for bird feeders, providing food for urban birds while reducing grain waste. The design is inspired by the concepts of sustainability and environmental conservation, promoting responsible grain sourcing and reducing waste.
When we stock up on grains in our homes, we often find ourselves unable to shi'y consume them within their shelf life. The resulting food waste weighs heavily on our conscience, and we begin to think of ways to reduce it. One day, while disposing of some discarded grains, we noticed some birds eating them and realized how difficult it was for birds to forage in cities, especially in an era of rapid urbanization.
Inspired by this observation, we began to think about how we could share the extra grains with birds. We believed this would help reduce grain waste, while also protecting birds and helping them forage for food. This idea inspired the development of Co-Grain, a design solution that transforms cereal packages into bird feeders. Our goal with Co-Grain is to encourage responsible grain procurement and reduce household grain waste while providing food for urban birds. By repurposing cereal packages into bird feeders, we can reduce waste and provide a food source for birds in urban areas.
We believe that Co-Grain represents a small but important step toward creating a more sustainable and compassionate world. It reminds us that our actions have an impact not only on ourselves, but also on the environment and the animals we share the planet with. By working together, we can create a future that coexists with nature in a way that benefits all people.
