For Orlando International Airport's brand new Terminal C, we were mandated to create and produce a series of immersive experiences exploring the knowns and unknowns of Central Florida. The experience rethinks the traveler's relationship with the airport by rekindling the joys of air travel through digital wonder. Using cutting edge technology, we designed and produced more than 70 interactive multimedia vignettes that are programmed according to the passenger journey, taking into account wait times, time of day and seasons. The video content is integrated into two large-scale media features inside the terminal.
The content features a multitude of mesmeric scenes spanning from manatees swimming in the Crystal River to interactive martian worlds and the vast ranchlands south of Orlando. Other vignettes dive into the lesser recognizable elements, including the story of the Highwaymen, a group of African-American painters who never received the spotlight that they deserve. The work was created using advanced CGI techniques, underwater filmmaking, live action and artificial intelligence (AI). For the past two years, our in-house team of dedicated designers, programmers, VFX artists, designers, cinematographers and creative directors have been collaborating to create unparalleled interactive experiences.
Serving as the focal point of Terminal C, the Moment Vault offers an interactive experience where inside, passengers are transported into 360° photorealistic worlds, created within the Unreal Engine™ game engine. The installation is composed of three giant screens within curved walls facing each other. The content covers 2979 square feet LED panels on all sides of the walls.
The second installation, Windows on Orlando is designed as an expansive panoramic reveal. A triptych of 32-foot-high screens spanning 114 feet give the illusion of three windows that open up onto mesmerizing scenes celebrating Orlando, from SpaceX rocket launches to bird migrations. Gentilhomme's in-house cinematographers, along with a local production team, shot with 12K resolution cameras at more than 20 different locations within a 50-kilometer radius of the airport.
Our work aims to reinforce the conversation about the importance of art in public spaces. These artistic interventions enhance the well-being of travelers. The series of installations is the first of its kind in the aviation space, providing a unique interactive digital experience for an airport that usually uses screens to broadcast flight information or advertising. By leveraging the magic of interactive technology, we're providing a never-before-seen gateway into local culture and fostering unexpected connections among passersby.
The objective was to create an experience that takes the passengers away from the noise and stress of the airport, immerses them in unfamiliar environments, and gives them extraordinary experiences.
We created a multimedia series for the Orlando International Airport's new Terminal C. Through two architecturally-scaled interactive and immersive multimedia installations, the project reimagines the passenger experience by connecting travelers with their surroundings–and each other–in ways previously unheard of. Through the mantra "the knowns and unknowns of greater Central Florida," we created 70 video capsules showcasing the region's most iconic natural and cultural wonders through storytelling and multimedia magic, in order to lower stress and restore the wonder of air travel. This is a first of its kind for a digital public art installation in the aviation space.
The Moment Vault installation serves as an iconic centerpoint in the new terminal. Three photorealistic CGI morphing walls house a whimsical interior where guests are immersed in a 360º interactive world. Inside, a motion capture system tracks up to 30 full body users' movements in 3D in real-time, placing them in scenes from Mars, swims with manatees, swarms of fireflies and schools of fish. The audio system integrates original mesmerizing musical compositions mixed and balanced to accommodate the 360º configuration, offering a fully immersive audio experience that reinforces the content. The objective was to separate passengers from the noise and stress of the airport, immersing them in unfamiliar and extraordinary environments.
The second installation, Windows on Orlando, is a triptych of 32-foot-high screens spanning 114 feet, giving the illusion of three windows opening up onto mesmerizing scenes celebrating Orlando. The result is a panoramic reveal of bird migrations, rocket launches, and more, appearing to unfold directly beyond the terminal. The accompanying soundscape was designed to reflect the true aural experience of such scenes, including bird migrations, sunrises, aerospace launches, and more.
The installations serve as a way to entertain and comfort travelers while introducing them to Central Florida's local culture and beauty. Informed by extensive research, the work provides an educational lens and eliminates physical barriers to cultural experiences. The work is seamlessly blended with the architecture and provides the terminal with a unique identity, creating lasting impressions on the facility's 60 million annual passengers and breathing new life into their journey.
The work addresses various social and commercial challenges facing air travel, which was once associated with style and excitement, but has since diminished in charm. The issue can be observed through widespread scenes of baggage chaos and the frustration experienced by travelers navigating crowded and high-stress spaces. In such environments, individuals are often disconnected from their surroundings and other travelers, limiting opportunities for positive, memorable experiences. However, studies demonstrate that art can combat frustration and stress in public spaces, bringing airport authorities to increasingly incorporate art into their newer systems as they compete with other facilities in a competitive tourism landscape.
