Nex Playground

Nex Playground is an active game system designed for families. Using AI and computer vision to track body movement, it turns screen time into active playtime for all ages, so families can explore, learn, and bond in new, fun ways.

Influenced by game nostalgia, Nex Playground's geometric form took inspiration from early Nintendo consoles, Rubix Cubes, and contemporary nostalgic designers, Teenage Engineering. Primitive shapes are balanced by an approachable character provided by the camera and LED creating a winking eye, and privacy cover adding a "monocle" for the lens.

The remote for on-screen navigation uses a mini joystick to gamify interactions– weighted to not roll, it's ergonomically appropriate for small and large hands. Colors signal joy and energy: bright and activating, they invite play while grounded in a home-friendly neutral.

level is a design studio led by two mothers. Our experience as parents, perspective on privacy, and eye for home aesthetics informed the team's approach to designing Nex Playground. With a sold out pre-order, Nex's dedication to pushing the boundaries of active entertainment will keep our families healthy, moving and having fun.

Meet Nex Playground, an active game system that delivers immersive games and experiences powered by body motion. Designed for family time, Nex instantly transforms your living room into an active play space to get the family moving, turning screen time into playtime encouraging players of all ages to get up, get engaged, explore, learn, and bond in new, fun ways.

Using cutting-edge AI, mobile, and vision technologies to capture your natural movements, Nex merges the digital and physical worlds. Without the need for holding or wearing sensors, or using headgear, players are effortlessly immersed into fun and creative experiences. With intuitive and natural gestures, there's no need for additional game controllers, sensors or clunky wearables, allowing up to four concurrent players to jump right into the action. Nex Playground reignites the joy of playing games together, transforming your living room into an arcade, gym, obstacle course or theme park.

Liberated from ergonomic requirements, level imagined a form imbued with character, details which infused joy, and exhilarating color spectrums that speak to excitement and movement. Primitive shapes are balanced with personality, achieved by leveraging the system's camera lens and LED indicator to create a subtle winking eye. Influenced by game nostalgia, Nex's geometric form took inspiration from early Nintendo consoles, Rubix Cubes, and contemporary nostalgic designers, Teenage Engineering.

The handheld remote that provides on-screen navigation between games, activities, uses a mini joystick to gamify the user interaction. Along with being weighted to not roll off surfaces, it is just the right size for small and large hands alike.

A category once shaped by fun, gaming devices have largely slipped into a world of functional monochromes.

Avoiding category-typical monochromes, Playground's colors signal joy and energy, as seen used by sports brands. Bright and activating, the hues invite play while being grounded in a home-friendly neutral.

Understanding the sensitivity families have around security and protection, privacy is of utmost importance to Nex Playground, as demonstrated by the integrated camera privacy cover and LED indicator. Motion detection data is limited to the device itself, ensuring that no video is captured or stored, and personal data remains secure. All processing takes place locally on the device, eliminating the need for cloud-based data processing and further reinforcing privacy measures. The "monocle" provides a camera cover for those wanting reassurances around privacy. The sweet, subtle winking eye of the Playground console delivers that "a-ha!" moment to those who realize it.

Nex Playground features a wide-angle camera, high-definition graphics, and powerful performance. Living in the home and on existing TV Stands, keeping Nex Playground compact was a focus and significant technical challenge. Housing powerful gaming technology meant heat mitigation was a significant requirement. Numerous iterations around perforation scale and layout led to two-sided venting to optimize airflow. This clean, minimal perforation that became a strong element of the geometric design language.

The wide camera lens was set flush to the unit to capture the broadest achievable play area. Materials and construction drive Playground's premium hardware experience. Weeks onsite with vendors in China ensured Playground's minimal draft angles, crisp geometry, and imperceivable witness lines.

level is a design studio led by two mothers. Our experience as parents, perspective on privacy, and eye for home aesthetics informed the team's approach to designing Nex Playground. Nex is helping humanity reconnect with the joy of movement through fun, social, and interactive motion entertainment that's available on any modern camera-equipped device. With over 5 million downloads and sold out preorder for their flagship hardware release, Nex Playground has been recognized in Time's Best Inventions of 2023, and was named Toy of the Year by Parents. Nex's dedication to pushing the boundaries of active entertainment will keep our families healthy, moving and having fun.
