Design Philosophy:
Danvas was born out of a shared love of working with creators, artists, and gallerists, an optimism about this exciting moment in the history of art and tech, and the realization that no display existed to properly showcase artwork in a museum-quality setting.
Design Opportunity:
Building on a rich analog history, and then accelerated by the rise of of digital, generative and video art, a number of generic digital picture frames have been introduced lately. These displays are usually just computer monitors or TVs capable of displaying art at typical resolutions, but not designed for large-scale fine-art installations, which is is limiting to the artist and sub-optimal for the viewer. (Most are based on ordinary small-scale LCD panels, not custom micro-LED technology, like Danvas). Because in today's museums, galleries, and homes such wall-mounted displays remain a common choice to display artworks, our aim with Danvas Series G was to honor and optimize the art on display, while providing new hardware and software functionality that was not available anywhere else.
Primary Goal:
The primary goal with Danvas Series G was to create the most experientially compelling digital art frame in the world – one that paired elevated design with cutting-edge technology, and provided unique tools for the creator and collector communities. (Additionally, the unit follows a white glove installation protocol, in line with art industry standards). Following below are additional unique aspects of the Danvas design solution.
Efficient Footprint:
Unlike traditional art or some digital displays, one of the fundamentals of the Danvas Series G is its ability to display multiple artworks in a gallery view, therefore reducing the need for multiple displays within the same household.
Ethically and Environmentally Responsible:
The wood frame is made from noble, yet ethically and locally-sourced materials. The design team went through hundreds of wood species and a thorough analysis of their physical properties, to down-select to the right one. Most other parts on the rear assembly are made using recycled aluminum and stainless steel. The parts are then finished using various types of powder-coatings, which unlike traditional solvent-based wet paint, does not generate harmful solvents, fumes, or airborne pollutants.
Upgradeable and Serviceable:
The bottom side of the frame slides down to reveal the control unit, and ports for power and network connections. This also allows the frame to be serviced and upgraded, not just in terms of software and firmware, but also in terms of electrical components, thereby delaying product obsolescence over time. The frame can also be re-touched or refinished as needed by Danvas specialists, just like any museum-quality wood frame.
Packaging and Delivery:
In the near future, Danvas is planning to have their own fleet of reusable wooden crates equipped with sensors to ensure temperature, humidity, and motion control during shipping and transit. These will serve as both delivery and return vessels, thereby eliminating one-use packaging and related waste.
Unique scale and image ratio for uncompromised rendering: Impressive 48 x 48 inch edge-to-edge display combined with a custom 1:1 image ratio, instead of the more common but unsuitable 16:9. Perfect brightness day and night: Danvas displays boast leading edge micro-LED technology, delivering rich color, strong contrast, and deep blacks, free of glare in all light conditions and viewing angles. Via an ambient light sensor, the brightness of the display is always optimally adjusted. Immersive Visual Experience: Most digital picture frames and TVs use LCD or OLED technology, requiring a glass cover or film over the screen, making for a less immersive experience and introducing reflections. Danvas displays boast fine-pitch micro-LED panels, edge-to-edge rendering, and a unique floating design. Immersive Audio experience: The product is designed and engineered with ultra low-profile drivers that are mounted to garolite panels and arranged in a stereo layout. The sound is then redirected through the built-in audio channels on the frame, delivering an immersive and multi-directional audio experience. Authentication Light: When connected to an NFT wallet, the Series G can convey the ownership and authenticity of an artwork via a soft light indicator at the bottom of the display. Various colors correspond to various authentication states, such as “Owned”, “Partially owned”, or “Displayed with no rights”. Connected App: Danvas Series G comes with an app for gathering, organizing, sharing, and casting digital art with a unique level of control. User-defined collections allow for custom playlists, custom shuffle and transition settings, and custom startup defaults. Frame design and acoustic channel: The industrial design of the Danvas Series G is reminiscent of a traditional float frame, but with a curved channel that captures the image area while also delivering powerful and immersive surround audio. Color, Material, Finish: Available in matte black, crisp white, or North American maple, the Series G’s display is designed to respectfully recede while the art itself makes a big impression in gallery spaces. The entire frame is custom crafted in the United States and hand-assembled to meet museum quality standards. All series G frames are machined and hand-finished from a single block of North American Maple. To achieve the desired design and surface quality, each side of the frame has to go through a multi-step operation on a large 5-axis CNC machine. - Frame: North American Maple - Side logo: Polished Nickel - Authentication light: Light diffusing acrylic - Display trim, LED cabinets, rear enclosure: Powder-coated aluminum or stainless steel - Soundboards: Garolite - Other mechanical components: Stainless Steel
