We took advantage of the single-hemisphere slow-wave sleep pattern of animals and designed an electric shock device that allows office workers to extend their working hours while sleeping.
"Speculating a possible future" has always been the direction of unremitting efforts of cutting-edge scholars, future laboratories, Google X and other innovative design teams. This time, the concept of speculative design is integrated into the context of furniture design, allowing designers in the product design profession to temporarily forget about form and function, and completely base themselves on "questioning the present" and "challenging the future." In this regard, we put forward a hypothesis about the future and use the form of furniture to convey a critique of reality to the audience.In the process of investigating natural society, we learned about the changes from discipline society to attack society.The latter turns a relationship of increasing one's commitment and effort to stand out among performance-seeking individuals into one of competition. Therefore, the phenomenon of involution has increased. When working or studying, people blindly compare the value of time to measure their efforts. However, in this state, the efforts they put in together with others, based on the length of time, not only did not bring better results, but increased the mental burden. In pursuit of performance, people work long hours leading to health problems. We have also provided support through some studies. For example, one study explored the relationship between sleep and cardiovascular disease, focusing on peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Scientists analyzed data from a total of more than 660,000 people and found that those who slept less than five hours had a 74% increased risk of PAD. In addition, the Irving laboratory used functional MRI scanners to detect brain activity during normal sleep and sleep deprivation, and observed Lack of sleep can significantly reduce brain cognition.

In order to make this idea reasonable, we introduced the "single brain slow wave sleep method". It usually occurs in aquatic mammals such as dolphins, seals, and many species of birds, and is a unique way of sleeping that they have evolved to balance rest and survival. This sleep pattern is characterized by one hemisphere of the brain sleeping while the other hemisphere remains awake. This special way of sleeping inspired us so much that we cleverly applied its mechanism to the human brain.
During the process of reasoning, we observed that under this mechanism, the awake cerebral hemisphere is not fully awake and can only perform some basic muscle memory activities, so we associate it with the repeated clicking actions of the mouse in the office scene. This is then abstracted and refined into the components of a game joystick. In addition, we also found in our research that dolphins swap the resting and awake brain hemispheres every two hours to ensure that the entire brain is fully rested. Therefore, we believe that we should set up a mode that allows people who work while sleeping to switch between the left and right brain hemispheres to work and rest at the same time. Finally, we decided to use an electric energy device to solve the existing problem.
And just like that, our furniture was born. You can see that the chair in the picture has only one armrest, reflecting the state of one hemisphere of the brain. The armless side reflects the body's paralyzed state while the other hemisphere is dormant. Also, the joystick on the armrest is an abstract sublimation of the office scene work. Repeatedly triggering the joystick represents the simple and repetitive tasks a person performs while sleeping in one hemisphere. In addition, two electrical stimulation devices embedded in the back of the chair work by changing the excitability of neurons to switch between the left and right brains. What should not be overlooked is the very regular look of our chair, which combines unconventional elements and on the contrary presents an unrealistic aesthetic.
