Jupiter

The student project brief was to create a mock brand for a line of products, first writing the design brief to guide the creative process and build the brand before designing the brand mark and packaging designs. The following packaging designs were developed for 3 SKUs: colouring pencils, pencil sharpener, and sticky tape.

Brand Identity: Jupiter™ is a fun and whimsical brand that is marketed towards creative youngsters who enjoy exploring and growing through the arts & crafts. Sharing the astrological sign characteristics of the planet Jupiter, it is associated to abundance and personal growth—an essential aspect to a child's learning and self-exploration phase. With a paper and drawing utensil, everyone starts off life as young creatives. Some document their lives, some tell stories, some draw because they love to, and some draw who they want to become. Let Jupiter™'s whimsical products do just that.

Brand Character: Whimsical and imaginative with an adventurous and creative spirit.

Brand Positioning: Jupiter™ creates child-friendly, sustainable products that enables children to explore their creativity, minimizing their ecological 'fingerprints'.

Target Consumer: The primary end user and target consumer are children aged 4-12 years old with specific items for particular subgroups (age groups 4-6; 7-9; and 10-12). Parents, particularly mothers, and occasionally relatives are the secondary end users and home purchasers.

Competition Overview:In determining the competition based on similar target consumer profiles and price point, Jupiter™ will be competing with brands Crayola, Maped, and Creatology in the children's arts & crafts supplies category of major chains such as Toys R Us, Michaels, and De Serres. From observing competitors' packaging, the structural packaging have generic forms and are not all made from biodegradable substrates (e.g. some contain plastic).

Packaging Overview:Aside from using sustainable substrates, Jupiter™ also brings fun into its packaging design through graphics and form. The colouring pencils' packaging box can be shortened to accommodate shortened pencils and can be accessed without pouring all the pencils out through a sliding lid mechanism, keeping play spaces more organized for the tidy parents. The packaging can be reused to house the products after opening.

Jury Commentary
