Solar Media - A Package-reuse Solution for BOP

Solar Media is a project of solar-energized lighting facilities, serving Africa and other underdeveloped areas with no electricity. We are entrusted to design the package, which the key is to enable packaging of all sizes to be reused when the product is consumed. Inside the box, the section corrugated paper can be easily folded into clothes-hangers. The box itself will naturally be used as a drawer. The outer pack with 6 boxes inside, will turn into durable wardrobes, cupboards or any storage space. Much to our delight, we see the possibility to reuse packaging and the decency brought to people's lives even in poverty-stricken areas.

Design Innovation

Solar Media's target consumers are BOP populations in areas without electricity in third world countries. We redesigned the seemingly ordinary packaging box by carefully managing the size and internal structure, so that the product packaging can be reused in a functional manner without increasing any cost. After taking out all the products, the small boxes originally containing each product set becomes a drawer box; the corrugated paper compartment originally used to divide the product inside becomes a hanger through simple folding; and the 6 set circulation box for transporting, after precise structural design, it turns into a durable wardrobe, combined with 6 drawer boxes, it can also become a paper drawer chest.

Benefit to User

Due to the lack of electric lighting, people in poverty-stricken areas of Africa and India use candles or kerosene lamps for lighting, which caused more than 5 million deaths. The annual cost of using candles and kerosene lamps is close to $50, hence exacerbating their poverty. Due to the economy in arrears, household items such as clothes and dishes have no storage, and the poor sanitary living conditions have caused serious diseases and deaths. These areas generally have pure, abundant and free solar energy sources, so Solar Media is the technology that solves lighting, and also education problems by using solar power for its lighting and video product to spread epidemic prevention knowledge.

The packaging we designed provides Solar Media's product packaging with functions other than protecting the product; through simple adjustments to the structure, and precise calculations without increasing any packaging costs. Consumers buy these outer boxes from the dealer at a very low price, converting them into storage such as reusable hangers, drawers, wardrobes through very simple folding. To a large extent, the sanitary conditions are greatly improved, and the resulting pathogen infection and disease transmission are further alleviated.

Benefit to Client/Brand

The brand's concerns for indigent users are certainly reflected through the design; We have re-adjusted the product placement, accurately calculated the size of the outer box and the circulation box, and in terms of material use and technology, the packaging box is as simple as possible. Furthermore, there are no additional costs. This helps the distributors gain more confidence in the sales for this product set, not only because of its low price, but also because of the design of the product and packaging, sincerely considering every detail for consumers, and trying to alleviate an important point while directly addressing the pain points. The problem is the vicious circle brought about by poverty and backwardness. Power-solution's brand image emphasizes human care, and it has been widely spread among the BOP crowd in the third world.

Benefit to Society

Under normal circumstances, the packaging of products cannot escape the fate of being discarded. The large-scale use of plastics and other materials has exacerbated the destruction of nature. Compared to replacing materials, we hope to innovate the functionality of packaging from the perspective of packaging reuse. Consumers buy the outer packaging home at a very low cost, which can be used long term. The recycling of corrugated paper makes the packaging more environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, it improves the sanitary conditions of the population in impoverished areas to a certain extent and relieves the diseases and death toll.

Appropriate Aesthetics

The design uses bright orange and green collisions on a large area to present a strong visual impact, at the same time, conveying the cleanness and energy attributes of the product. We redesigned the Solar Media logo, interlocking the letters using a thick Sans Serifs to give it a strong sense of energy. All of the information is redesigned in a mosaic icon form, corresponding with professional layout design. Powerful logos, bright and eye-catching colors, rigorous and concise layout design, together, a professional and high-quality brand experience is presented to consumers.
