Meowtain is a project aimed to create a harmonious living space for both humans and their feline companions. It explores home as a place where humans value the quality of life for their companion animals in connection to their own quality of life. The objective of this piece is to enhance the everyday experience by exploring the function of furniture in the domestic environment, aiming to improve emotional health and overall well-being.
Meowtain was constructed with plywood and metal parts for internal structure, incorporating foam, batting, felt, and boucle fabric for a plush and welcoming finish.
Three upper layers (shapes inspired by terrace field) are stacked on a central pole, enabling them to pivot into various configurations. The swiveling function of the back cushion is indicated by the metal pole hardware, and spinning the layers into different positions becomes a delightful and rewarding performative act. The "arms" exhibit smooth movement, striking a balance between flexibility and firmness to remain stable when utilized as a backrest.
It deliberately avoids the immediate association with traditional "cat furniture," while the design subtly incorporates elements inspired by the feline world, such as backrest forms extending into space and stacking around a central pole, reminiscent of a cat tree.
The gentle embrace of upholstered arms enveloping the human body creates a warm and snug sensation, providing comfort. Simultaneously, the material and varied height of the piece make it enticing for cats to join in. This "embrace" draws attention to the connection between furniture and the body, engaging both on a physical and emotional level.
