Murray's Cheese Shop & Cheese Bar

Murray's Cheese is an artisanal cheese and specialty foods retailer and wholesaler based in New York City. Founded in Greenwich Village in 1940 by Murray Greenberg, the company later expanded, and in 2012 opened a restaurant (also in Greenwich Village), Murray's Cheese Bar. The new Long Island City retail store and restaurant are Murray's first full-service brick-and-mortar locations independent of its Greenwich Village stores.

Murray's new side-by-side retail store and restaurant are located on the ground floor of a new residential development in Long Island City, with a prime corner storefront location. Rockwell Group was inspired by Murray's state-of-the-art cheese caves facility and laboratory, also in Long Island City, for the new spaces. A cheese library is the focus of the retail space, conceived as a minimal twist on Murray's Cheese laboratories. Light oak, black and white tiles, and concrete round out the shop, along with pendants inspired by the organic drape of cheesecloth. Copper and terracotta color details are reminiscent of the vats and molds used to make cheese. The restaurant continues with this materiality, combining a bolder, deeper and more vibrant color palette. Purples, greens, and browns suggest the changes in cheese chemistry as it ages, while custom shelving mimics the cave storage where cheese is aged.

The retail shop features banquette seating for coffee and all-day grab 'n go dining, a cheese and charcuterie counter, a mobile artisan counter for displays and demos, and walls lined with a cheese "library" refrigerator. Millwork shelving is provided to display products and curios. A band of terracotta paint crowns the space and serves as a datum line. The polished concrete floor is a neutral backdrop for black and white tile accents on counter dies and terrazzo countertops. An opening in the concrete dividing wall between the shop and the restaurant provides a framed connection between the two. White cloth pendant lantern lights float within the space, reminiscent of cheese cloth.

A long bar anchors the restaurant and makes a bold statement with a green tile bar die, oak tambour accents, oak frame, and copper colored top. A glass case cheese display with green metal framing, sits atop the bar counter, presenting the day's available cheese selections. The back bar and wall displays replicate the metal grid shelving used in Murray's cheese caves A dropped ceiling above the bar with a suspended metal and wood gantry makes the space feel more intimate. A plum colored Venetian plaster finish wraps the wall and ceiling in the dining area, introducing bold, monumental elements. The raised ceiling height accommodates additional pendant lanterns, visually connecting the restaurant to the shop. Built-in banquette seating lines the window wall. A mobile cheese cart highlights the theatricality of cheese service.
