In this project I have been working on a new possibilities of a shoe construction. This shell form is shaped of vegetable tanned leather and strenghtened by thermoplastic inner lining. This makes togahter with calf leather lining firm shell construction which holds on the feet and still can be easily put on.

1. Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the challenge posed to you? Did it get you excited and why?
I have been working on a new possibilities of a shoe construction and during the process I came with some innovative ideas. However the idea is one thing and the function is another. So after number of prototypes I have finally found the construction which worked and THAT was the biggest excitement.
2. What point of view did you bring to the challenge? Was there anything additional that you wanted to achieve with this project or bring to this project that was not part of the original brief?
To the challenge I brought new way of constructing and wearing shoes. Also I have been working with traditional shoe material - vegetable tanned leather which is used in unusual and innovative way.
3. When designing this project, whose interests did you consider? (Discuss various stakeholders, audiences, retailing, manufacturing, assembly, distribution, etc., for example.)
I have been thinking about it as a innovation and there is long way from prototype to the production. But even though these shoes are constructed another way than normal shoes I think they can be manufactured.
4. Describe the rigor that informed your design. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) If this was a strictly research or strategy project, please provide more detail here.
During the process I have been consulting with 2 traditional shoe makers who helped me with the process of tightening and forming of a leather. Than the thermoplastic material was vacuum formed and the final form was made by hot steam right-away on real feet.
All the layers were glued and pressed togather so it makes sort of crust which can be a little flexible so u can put the shoe on the feet but stiff enough to hold the feet when walking or running.
5. What is the social value of your design? (Gladdening, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, labor-mindful, environmental, cultural, etc.) How does it earn its keep in the world?
I think that design should be primary about finding more functional, nicer or better thing. Also another aspect I have considered was ecological - the sole is made of recycled rubber.
But it is still a shoe and even though it is a new design it is perfecly comfortable which is the value I appreciate the most.
6. If you could have done one thing differently with the project, what would you have changed?
After every project I have done I alway think of what I should do different but it would never end so... nothing. I would not change anything.
When we first started through the entries this one rose to the surface right away with our other winners. It presented a beautiful, simple approach to materials and form that we all resonated with. After conversing about it longer, we wished the design was pushed further in its ideas, and resolved some visual comfort and function issues we all had. All in all, a GREAT start, but we would love to see more iterations to resolve end use better.
