GRID-IT!
1. Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the challenge posed to you? Did it get you excited and why?
People want their stuff organized and this problem affects many markets. GRID-IT! solves this by allowing the user to accommodate their items neatly, securely and within view for quick, easy access.
2. What point of view did you bring to the challenge? Was there anything additional that you wanted to achieve with this project or bring to this project that was not part of the original brief?
GRID-IT! goes beyond the traditional "pocket" or "sleeve". GRID-IT! endures serious vibrations, water, UV and quick, jerky movements while still holding your object firmly in place. This was made possible by weaving a UV resistant, non-slip rubber elastic into the bands.
3. When designing this project, whose interests did you consider? (Discuss various stakeholders, audiences, retailing, manufacturing, assembly, distribution, etc., for example.)
We considered as wide an audience and market as possible. Organisation affects virtually every market category and vertical. Cosmetics, baby gear, medical, outdoor adventure, business travelers, consumer electronics, boating, art supplies, photography, automotive, office supplies, cycling, aviation, and the list goes on. Today GRID-IT! is used in over 200+ products and growing.
4. Describe the rigor that informed your design. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) If this was a strictly research or strategy project, please provide more detail here.
Initially we set out to design a travel goods line for young digital globe trotters. Part of that creative exercise included "a day in the life of ..." hypothetical journeys for a wide variety of travelers, males and females between the ages of 17 - 35. We paid close attention to the types of objects these characters carried on their person and which they wanted access to quickly and frequently. We also noticed how short lived the life-cycles for electronics is. There's a new camera, battery, cell phone, charges, music player, pretty much daily. Thats an important observation because our solution needed to accommodate - unknown future gadgets and an individuals preferences for grouping, sorting, and orientation.
5. What is the social value of your design? (Gladdening, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, labor-mindful, environmental, cultural, etc.) How does it earn its keep in the world?
It save people time, our most valuable resource.
6. If you could have done one thing differently with the project, what would you have changed?
We changed everything and the end result was absolutely nothing like we initially imagined. GRID-IT! was the result of "guided and informed intuition". There was no client, no assignment, just an openness to explore without commitment.
At first glance we did not like the name and how it presented itself – so WHAMO! like. But after sifting through the verbiage and name, we focused on the product itself, and really love how it looked and more importantly, how it functioned. A very clever design that addresses and resolves a specific need. Really liked the visual form it took even without objects in it.
