Seeing Theory: A Visual Introduction to Probability and Statistics

SeeingTheory.io is an educational website that aims to teach the fundamental concepts of statistics through the use of interactive visualizations. Statistical literacy is becoming increasingly important in today's data-driven society. In order to make the field of statistics more accessible, we have developed a collection of 18 interactive web visualizations, each of which presents a bite-sized concept that is commonly encountered in the standard introductory statistics curriculum.

SeeingTheory.io is an educational website that aims to teach the fundamental concepts of statistics through the use of interactive visualizations. Statistical literacy is becoming increasingly important in today’s data-driven society. Yet in spite of the increasing demand for statistical competence, pedagogical approaches to the teaching of statistics lag behind. In particular, students of math and statistics often encounter significant roadblocks due the highly symbolic nature of mathematical equations, expressions, and formulae. Although mastering the use of precise mathematical notation and language is an important skill in itself, most of the core ideas in the discipline of statistics can be communicated visually, without resorting to complicated equations.

The Seeing Theory team believes that it is far more important for a student to develop probabilistic and statistical intuition than to be able to recite specific equations. To this end, we have developed a collection of 15 interactive visualizations (with more on the way), each of which presents a bite-sized concept that is commonly encountered in the standard introductory statistics curriculum. By using visual explanations, we are able to reach students for whom purely mathematical notation is all but impenetrable. By using interactive visualizations, we force students to engage and explore — passive learning is not an option.

Although there are some wonderful educational visualizations on the web already, we know of no other website that presents a completely visual program in probability and statistics that is as integrated and as comprehensive as Seeing Theory.
