skop - Next Generation Microscope

Can a microscope be modernized for the next generation of explorers? Why is microscopy getting more and more unattractive these days, especially for younger generations, and how could we change that? Back in the days a microscope was a ne plus ultra gift for every kid, today the world wide web provides all the images you desire and a self-initiated microscoping seems needless. The challenge for my bachelor thesis was to rethink the common architecture of a microscope and create an affordable, but yet high quality, and digitalized system.

High quality microscope. Miniaturized. Connected.

The first step towards that is skop. By combining digital advantages with an optical system skop helps to get great results way more simply and faster. A built-in APS-C Sensor allows you to capture incredible pictures and share what you have discovered. You can use skop as a mobile instrument or stationary at home. Outdoors a LED ring light provides a controllable illumination source and skop works like an incident light microscope. Attached to a a station on your desk you can get the chance to explore in transmitted light mode.

Because of it's compact architecture you can bring skop everywhere you want. In stand-alone mode an OLED electronic view finder provides high resolution images. Without additional use of any other device it is possible to adjust settings on board and easily capture pictures by pushing the shutter button. Aperture, shutter speed and light intensity can be finetuned manually or get automatized to achieve great results.

Connected to a smartphone your display turns into a large viewfinder and you get the full control on your device. For outdoors the microscope is attached to a foldable tripod. Precisely the settings can be adjusted on the display and viewed in real time. Of course you can capture every moment in a picture or video. Edit the image, show it to your friends or share it with the skop community. For the next level of exploring you can connect skop to your home station. Now you can analyze your samples in a transmitted light mode and dive into a entirely new world. A complex application on your smartphone or laptop will help you to detect unknown structures and organisms with a enormous data base and augmented reality technology.

Based on a modular system skop is perfect for beginners to start basic. With several different lenses, view finders, filters and stands you can expand your equipment over time to keep microscopy interesting and fascinating.
